The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council encourages the use of The Outdoor Safety Code across all outdoor activities, sports and recreations.

  • Plan your tripSeek local knowledge, plan the route you will take and the amount of time you can reasonably expect it to take. 
  • Tell someone  - Tell someone your plans and leave a date for when to raise the alarm if you haven’t returned.
  • Be aware of the weatherNew Zealand’s weather can be highly unpredictable.  Check the forecast and expect weather changes. 
  • Know your limitsChallenge yourself within your physical limits and experience. 
  • Take sufficient suppliesMake sure you have enough food, equipment and emergency rations for the worst case scenario. 
  • Take an appropriate means of communication

Online Outdoor Intentions Services

Adventure Buddy is a monitored outdoor intentions service. Complete the online form and if you haven’t checked in by the due date and time, the Adventure Buddy team will attempt to contact the user and their registered contacts. If the missing person(s) still cannot be located, then the Adventure Buddy team will raise the alert directly with the New Zealand Police.
