A great overnight, 18km return tramp from the Inwood lookout carpark to Hunters Hut with fabulous 360 degree views on the tops. The weather window looked promising after a good dumping of fresh snow a few days before. There was still a bit of wind on the tops that had us quickly descending after a 1.5hr climb from the carpark. The track/poled route was well marked to the river and after a bit of scrambling around a few large boulders on the riverbank we made it to the hut in 4.5hrs. The hut is located on the bushline with great views NE to the Ben Nevis-Mt Ellis ridgeline and hadn't seen much traffic over winter with the last visitors 6 weeks prior. Had plenty of time to collect some firewood and enjoyed a pleasant afternoon/evening relaxing in the hut. The clouds cleared overnight and we had a cloudless blue sky as we climbed above the bushline the following day. We meet a number of large groups out enjoying the stunning winters days views after we reached the ridgetops and were back in the hut in 5 hours.
